The Future of Long Haul Travel Challenge Pack has been designed to get students redefining the future of aviation by designing the world’s longest non-stop flight. Throughout the pack, students will be exploring the challenges of ultra long haul travel, developing innovative solutions for passenger comfort, enhancing the in-flight experience, and optimising aircraft design to create a seamless journey from Sydney to New York City.

Students can complete this pack digitally, or on a printed copy and will be challenged to work individually or in teams as they complete three activities related to redesigning the future of long haul flying. Each activity will see students provided with a page of information to outline what is being asked of them, along with a second page of information with links to case studies to help shape their thinking.

To assist students with their ideas, they will be provided with three user personas to consider, all with specific needs and frustrations. As students bring their future of long haul flying recommendations to life they will be asked to prepare a script and slides for a 3-5 minute pitch outlining their plans.

This is a great activity pack for educators looking to find an engaging way to help students build their innovation skills whilst linking to the interest area of aviation. This activity pack can be adapted to suit your preferred time length and delivery style. It is recommended that students are given at least 6-8 hours of working time to bring their ideas to life.

Challenge Areas:

As students work towards redesigning the future of long haul flying, they will be working through the following challenge areas to create their solution. These include:

Flight Scheduling: Students will be creating a seven-day flight schedule for the Sydney-New York route, considering flight duration, time zone differences, and aircraft turnaround time to optimize departure and arrival times that minimise jet lag and maximise passenger convenience.

Cabin Layout: Students will be redesigning the cabin layout of an Airbus A350-1000 for ultra long-haul flights, optimising space to enhance passenger comfort, meet safety regulations, and provide an enjoyable experience for all classes, from Economy to First.

Paid Upgrades: Students will be creating a set of innovative paid upgrade options for passengers on ultra long-haul flights, balancing profitability and passenger satisfaction by offering personalised extras both before and during the flight.

The Lounge: Students will be designing a premium airport lounge experience tailored for passengers on ultra long-haul flights, creating a luxurious space that offers relaxation, rejuvenation, and convenience before their journey from Sydney to New York.

Launch Campaign: Students will be creating a plan to celebrate the launch of this groundbreaking route with an inaugural flight campaign designed to generate excitement, engage passengers, and showcase the future of long-haul travel.
